Patterns

Updated: Jan 19, 2024

Now that my blog has officially made its promotional debut, I have to give the people something good. And that good thing is a rank of all the patterns. These are the only 20 valid patterns and yes, fruit is a pattern.

Also a couple blog updates!! Thanks to everyone who subscribed to my mailing list, you wont regret it. I’ve been getting some questions about commenting too. Im pretty sure you can only comment or view comments from a laptop and if you ever have something you want to share, please comment it! (also little note I may ace fixed it and comment might work for phones now too). Finally, coming soon will be my first guest writer/ranker so get hyped! She’s my only blogger friend and actually the person who put me on blogging so it’s only fitting she’s my first guest.

I made a little visual aid because I’ve already met too many people in my life who don’t know pattern names. I also chose a version of each of the patterns that I like for this so keep that in mind.

I was really torn between polka dot, floral, stripes, and houndstooth for the number one spot (they’re all so good!). But floral came out on top because I’ve always been a floral girl (and when I say floral my ideal type would be a vintage, grandma, curtain vibes type of floral not a small ditsy floral). I only just entered my polka dot era so it just wouldn’t be right to put it as number one. But shoutout to Quinn (Ellas brother) for letting me use his childhood polkadot sheets this year. Using them in Muskoka started my polka dot journey and made me who I am today.

I’ve always loved is houndstooth but no one ever knows what it is when I refer to it #justiceforhoundstooth and then stripes just like always hit - especially if they’re thin. Plaid is also high because Vivienne Westwood. And then I also love paisley, damask, and toile because they are all just slight deviations from floral.

Animal prints are epic and make me think of my mom because 75% of her wardrobe is either animal print or metal details. The best animal print has always been zebra - I also feel like it’s severely underrated. Even though tiger is essentially brown zebra it is just so very different, hence its placement at the bottom. Cheetah is also great and I love the colourful Lisa Frank cheetah/leopard. Camouflage is a solid pattern but the good type of camo is realtree where there is actual sticks and leaves on it, not just blobs. Fruit is a hard thing to place because a nice fruit pattern can be gorgeous but I also feel like fruit patterns can get bad quickly.

And now onto the worst of the worst. 70’s psychedelic patterns are cool but sometimes it’s just too much for me. I hate checkerboard, it gives me a headache after looking at it for only a second. Chevron is one of the ugliest patterns ever and should definitely be lower on the list BUT I gave it extra points because “chevron” sounds like “Siobhan” and also because I do like Missoni chevron. Scales is an even worse version of chevron. I love mermaids but this is where I draw the line.

PS. I’ve gotten asked “how will you account for your own bias?” My answer: What kind of question is that?!? The whole point of this blog is to express my bias because my opinions are always correct. duh.

First of all, where is the vegetable pattern?👀 I mean shouldn't it be included since fruit is up there.. or at least a meat pattern (referring back to gagas iconic meat dress)🥓 which technically the meat pattern should be number 1 if it was an option because 1-ICONIC and 2-it would be a hate crime to vegetarians😊😊to put it in the top slot.💋 Also who would openly wear a fruit pattern.. I feel like in 2022 it would be too fruity..👀🍒 wearing a vegetable pattern would be much more mysterious and c*nty.🍭 Hence my thought that vegetables should be on this list instead of fruit and it would be cracking the top 10 at least. Imagine a cucumber patterned mini…

Abby this is a full on blog post in itself. I respect the passion and commitment but I have to disagree with your thoughts and I am always right because I’m the rank master. BUT you’re onto something with the cucumber mini skirt.

Floral has no place at #1. Disgraceful. Stripes, always.
